What the day is like
Autumn evenings when the stags are roaring and you can hear them across the valley. Heard far more often than seen.
For a few weeks each autumn the red deer stags roar, and on a still evening you can hear it across a whole valley. It is the loudest thing these forests do all year, and it is the rare wildlife evening where the odds are on your side — because hearing counts.
Heard, not necessarily seen
Stags roar from cover, often several at once, answering each other. Some evenings one walks out onto open pasture in the last light and some evenings none does. We watch the forest edge from a distance with scopes; we do not go in after them, which would end the evening for everyone including the deer.
The season is short
Roughly mid-September to mid-October, and it does not consult the calendar. We run it while it lasts and we stop when the roaring stops, rather than selling an evening in November when the woods have gone quiet.

The best chance of seeing an animal in the open, and the coldest hour.
20:30Walk out and back
Out with head torches, back to Brașov.

Questions people ask
What are the chances of hearing them?
Good in the season, on a still evening — this is the one wildlife experience where the thing you came for is audible from a kilometre away. We still publish no figure, for the same reason as everywhere else on this site: we have not counted enough evenings to state one honestly.
Will we see a stag?
Sometimes, at distance, on open ground at last light. Treat it as a bonus on top of the sound rather than the point of the evening.
Can we get closer?
No. Pushing into cover during the rut disturbs animals at the most demanding weeks of their year, and it would move them off the ground for everyone who comes after us.
When exactly does it run?
Mid-September to mid-October, give or take a week either side depending on the weather. Dates outside that window are not offered.
