What the day is like
A morning on what the animals leave behind — prints, scat, rub trees, hair on wire. No hide, and nothing to wait for.
Four hours on foot in the forest, learning to read what the animals leave behind. Prints in mud and snow, scat, rub trees, claw marks, hair caught on wire, the difference between a boar wallow and a deer bed.
Why this exists
Most people who come for wildlife want to see an animal, and most evenings they do not. This morning is the other half of the subject and the half that never disappoints: the ground itself records who walked over it, and once somebody shows you how to read that, a forest stops being scenery.
What you will not do
Wait. Nothing here depends on an animal turning up, which is exactly why we run it — it is the one wildlife morning we can promise will deliver.
Pace
Slow, and short. Four kilometres in four hours, most of it standing still looking at the floor.
The day, hour by hour
08:00Pickup and drive in
Collected from Brașov, forty-five minutes to the forest.
09:00The first soft ground
River mud and the edges of puddles hold prints best. We start where the record is clearest and work out what walked through in the night.
10:00Into the trees
Rub trees, scratch marks, browse lines and beds. What each one tells you about the animal that made it, and what it does not.
11:15Scat, and what is in it
Unglamorous and the single most informative thing in the forest. Species, diet, and roughly when.
12:00Back to Brașov
Back by early afternoon, with the rest of the day yours.

Guides are not booked individually. We assign whoever knows that ground and season best, and tell you who it is when we confirm.
Questions people ask
Will we see an animal?
Almost certainly not, and the morning does not depend on it. Large mammals in this forest hear you long before you arrive. What you will see is the evidence they leave, which is there every day of the year.
Why not in summer?
Prints need mud or snow to hold. In high summer the ground is baked and the record is largely gone, so we do not sell a morning of looking at dry earth.
Is it suitable for children?
From ten, and it is one of the better options for them — there is something to find every few minutes rather than three hours of sitting still.
How far do we walk?
About four kilometres on forest tracks, with very little climbing. Boots rather than trainers, because the good ground is the wet ground.
